We will discuss how our investigation of a long-standing open problem concerning a classical combinatorial object called tableaux led to the discovery of a new family of tableaux. We will see how these new tableaux help the study of questions in contemporary areas such as Macdonald theory and string theory. No background will be assumed. Joint work with Lapointe and with Lam, Lapointe and Shimozono.
