Algebraic cobordism is a geometrically defined theory on varieties of finite type over a field that refines both the Chow ring and the Grothendieck group of algebraic vector bundles. We'll give a description of the construction of algebraic cobordism and its fundamental properties, and then describe applications to Riemann- Roch theorems, degree formulas and properties of quadratic forms.
