I will discuss a connection between two types of "non-classical" invariants of Legendrian knots, namely those derived from holomorphic curves and those derived from generating families. More specifically, I shall describe how the existence of a ruling of a Legendrian knot is equivalent to the existence of an augmentation of its Legendrian contact homology, and how one can count the number of augmentations from the number of rulings.
