First of two talks.

In 1991, Fedor Bogomolov outlined a program for reconstructing function fields out of certain metabelian quotients of their absolute Galois groups. If completed, this would solve the birational variant of Grothendiecks anabelian program in dimension at least 2. In this talk I will discuss Bogomolov´s program in birational anabelian geometry; in particular, I will focus on the local theory developed by Bogomolov and Tschinkel where one recovers valuations from Galois theory.
