For any choice of complete, orthogonal (but not necessarily primitive) idempotents, we can define a basis graph, which, by the "straightening out" theorem, captures aspects of the structure which are stable under deformation. For some semigroups, a proper choice of idempotents allows the basis graph to capture aspects of the structure which are particular to the semigroup.
