The configuration space of ordered k-tuples of distinct points in a manifold has admitted many applications to braid groups, knot theory, the topology of links, homotopy theory as well as robotics in the form of 'motions of robot legs'. This lecture, accessible to students, will illustrate some applications as well as recent developments together with current problems.
