First of two talks.

I will first talk about a paper with the same title in which Richard Taylor proved a version of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. This result combined with Ravi Ramakrishna's result shows that often, odd two dimensional mod p representations of G_Q arise from the torsion of GL_2 type abelian varieties, which can be regarded as evidence for Serre's conjecture.
