Due in part to the discovery of beautiful interactions between contact geometry and low dimensional topology, symplectic geometry, and dynamics, there has been amazing advances in our understanding of contact geometry. After recalling some of the basic ideas in contact geometry I will discuss several of these surprising connections. I will then give an overview of the current state of low dimensional contact geometry and describe a few of the techniques for studying contact structures.
