The covering spectrum is a new spectrum defined on compact metric spaces which is completely determined by the marked length spectrum, but has nice convergence properties. It can be used to study the fundamental groups of compact Riemannian Manifolds and other semilocally simply connected spaces. This is joint work with Guofang Wei.
