Any group algebra over a field of characteristic p has a deformation over a parameter space of mixed characteristic to a separable algebra. Donald and Flaigan asked whether one could find such a deformation over a parameter space whose generic point has characteristic p. For the symmetric groups this is possible. We survey the known results, which are all positive, and then focus on a potential counter-example, SL(2,3).
