We will recall basics of diophantine approximation and mention Roth, Schmidt, Uchiyama results giving exponents for algebraic numbers and functions (in characteristic zero). The function field (characteristic finite) situation is still not understood even conjecturally. We will describe recent progress with connections to deformation theory as well as continued fractions.
