In this talk I will sketch the proof of the Friedlander conjecture for SL_2, SL_3. This involves a new approach based on A^1-homotopy theory and a ``topological" step which, via the A^1-derived functors of the free Lie algebra functor, reduces the conjecture to a rigidity property of the A^1-chain complexes of split tori.
