I'll describe Milnor's \mu-invariant, which (among other things) distinguishes the Borromean rings from three unlinked rings, and then I'll present a recent geometric interpretation of \mu that uses Seifert surfaces. Along the way, I hope to show why \mu is to be understood as an integer modulo some other number.
