Abstract: Density functional theory (DFT) has become an important tool to study electronic structure in physics, chemistry and material sciences. The success and popularity of DFT calls for investigations from an applied mathematical point of view. This talk will focus on some recent progress in mathematical understandings and algorithmic developments about DFT: The continuum limit from electronic structure to elasticity and the linear scaling algorithms to solve DFT models.
