The mathematics of telecommunications has evolved very rapidly, starting with the 1948 paper of Shannon. This evolution has now enabled almost instant communications from almost anyone to almost anyplace. This remarkable achievement, only a dream twenty years ago, has been enabled by the mathematics of coding and modulation. This talk will review these developments in hindsight.
