I will describe a construction of a characteristic class associated to any representation up to homotopy of a Lie groupoid. When applied to the adjoint representation, this class agrees with the modular class of Evens, Lu, and Weinstein. This class can, in a certain homological sense, be interpreted as the obstruction to the existence of an invariant volume.
