When is a symmetric group module a sum of trivial modules induced from parabolic subgroups? This question is addressed by studying the combinatorics of the monomial character, whose representation-theoretic and geometric significance is suggested by conjectures involving chromatic symmetric functions, immanants of totally nonnegative matrices, and Hecke algebras of type A.
