How does a chain move when you shake it? I will briefly discuss the history of this question, from Daniel Bernouilli to the present, and include some startling experimental results. Mathematically, the dynamics are described by a nonlinear wave equation, which can be analyzed and/or simulated. The fact that the chain cannot pass through itself provides a topological condition which allows for the `natural' tying of knots.
