We will talk about several long-standing open problems involving the search for a description of non-negative numbers that arise in geometry, representation theory, and physics as connected to Schubert Calculus, Gromov-Witten invariants, and Macdonald polynomials. We will see how combinatorics was used to solve related problems and promises to shed light on these open problems.
