Kiyoshi Oka had, as a pioneer of several complex variables, a very original viewpoint. In 1947, he wrote about it in a letter to Teiji Takagi who is known by his work in class field theory. Questions that motivated the development of several complex variables will be discussed in connection to such visions of mathematics.
