The underlying combinatorics of QFT is governed by the quest for ``locality'', resulting in the Bogoliubov recursion and forest formulas. This establishes Hopf and Lie algebras, building on underlying operads. The primitive elements in these algebraic structures are graphs whose residues connect topology to number theory.
