Short-range entanglement and invertible field theories

Abstract: There is now a robust mathematical theory of topological quantum field theories. In physics they can be used to approximate the long-range behavior of systems with an energy gap. Invertible topological theories are a very special case that can be studied using stable homotopy theory. This combination of ideas leads to proposed topological invariants of certain condensed matter systems.
