We describe a recent conjecture of Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, Ulyanov and the speaker, which gives a combinatorial formula for the character of the space of diagonal harmonics. We show how our conjecture contains several other previous conjectures as special cases. Connections with the theory of Macdonald polynomials and the ribbon tableaux generating functions of Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon are discussed.
