The spaces of arcs of a variety parametrize morphisms from the formal disk to the given variety. I will explain why the change of variable formula in motivic integration allows the description of certain invariants of singularities in terms of spaces of arcs, and I will illustrate the advantage of working with arcs in attacking some problems on singularities
