The talk will consider the moduli space of curves of genus g with n marked points. Special loci in this space parameterize marked curves with a given automorphism. For genus 0 over the complex numbers, this situation has been studied by Leila Schneps. After reviewing that work, the talk will discuss the case of higher genus, and of non-zero characteristic.
