An algebraic curve C determines an abelian variety A=Jac(C). We compare properties of C and A. Such questions can be made more precise by studying the image T of the moduli space of algebraic curves (of a given genus g) in the moduli space of (principally polarized) abelian varieties (of dimension g). Concepts used will be explained carefully, and open problems and conjectures will be formulated.
