John Morgan and I classified the weight three variations of Hodge structure over the thrice punctured sphere which could arise from families of Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{2,1}=1. Some puzzles remained, however, regarding actual geometric realization of such families. In this talk I'll provide a progress report on the search for these Calabi-Yau manifolds. A special role is played by geometric transitions.
