The classical von Neumann inequality elegantly relates the supremum norm of a polynomial or an analytic function f(z) on the unit disk to the norm of f(A), where A is a contractive linear operator. We will tour from the classical to a modern setting for functions analytic on the unit polydisk. No special knowledge will be required for this talk.
