I will talk about Peter Scholze's new proof of some cases of the weight- monodromy conjecture. This uses the notion of "perfectoid space", which he defined recently. The conjecture has to do with the monodromy filtration of the etale cohomology of a variety over a local field. Earlier cases of the conjecture were proved by Grothendieck and Rapoport-Zink.
