This is the first talk in a continuing series which will meet roughly every other Tuesday throughout the summer, alternating with the "Making Matrices Better" project. In this talk, the speaker will focus on background material and then discuss some of the theorems about total curvature of submanifolds of Euclidean space, proved by Chern and Lashof.
