The inverse Galois problem -- to show that every finite group is the Galois group of a polynomial with rational coefficients -- will be the common thread of the talk. Going back to the early stages of the problem, I will focus on the geometric approach, which is based on some specialization process. More than two hundred years after Galois, the problem remains largely open. I will explain some recent progress, point out some difficulties and indicate some new research lines.
