I will discuss proper holomorphic mappings between balls in complex Euclidean spaces of different dimensions. One of the main points will be comparing the notions of spherical and homotopy equivalence. Rather than trying to prove any deep theorems, I will develop things from the beginning and point to the many links with other areas of mathematics. Hence the talk will be accessible to a general audience, including beginning graduate students.
