Geroch proved that there is a homeomorphism between any globally hyperbolic spacetime and a product of the real line with one of its Cauchy surfaces. Recently this was strengthened by Bernal and Sanchez to a diffeomorphism. The splitting makes it possible to define the Hamiltonian formalism and canonical quantization.
