After some historical commentary, we investigate how model equations for water waves arise in practice. The theory forthcoming from this exercise is then brought to bear upon problems of importance in oceanography. The discussion will include issues arising in tsunami propagation, rogue wave generation and beach protection strategy, as time permits.

No prior knowledge of water-wave theory will be assumed.
