We introduce the technique of anabelian intersection theory to see how the algebraic geometry of a surface over Q-bar is encoded group-theoretically in the absolute Galois group of its function field. We apply this to prove that Galois groups are outer automorphism groups, and to prove the Birational Anabelian Theorem for Surfaces over Q-bar.
