Castelnuovo Theory for projective space tells us when a sufficiently large collection of points lie on a rational normal curve. It turns out, there is a strong analogue for abelian varieties, however, it only quite works out for Jacobians of curves, with Abel-Jacobi curves playing the role of rational normal curves. This gives a characterization of Jacobians among abelian varieties of all dimension.
