Title: Engineering Very Long-Lived States Abstract: In many optical and quantum problems it is desirable to spatially confine energy in a particular mode for a long time interval. After a discussion of the mathematics of energy confinement in energy-conserving extended systems (scattering resonances, Fermi's Golden Rule,...), we discuss several problems, in which optimal energy-confining structures are sought.
