This is a pre-talk for Seth Sullivant's talks next week. I'll review the basics of toric geometry at a level friendly for the uninitiated, and hopefully in a way that's pleasant for combinatorists and other non-algebraic geometers. Time permitting, I'll discuss why toric varieties are of importance for (algebraic) statistics.
