I will talk about the problem of realizing finite simple groups as Galois groups of number fields. Recent work on the Langlands program by Harris and Taylor allows one to associate Galois representations to automorphic forms in considerable generality. Khare, Savin, and I have shown that these representations can be used to realize various finite simple groups of Lie type as Galois groups over Q.
