The extented objects appearing in string theory tend to couple to higher bundles (higher gerbes) with connection, notably the Kalb-Ramond 2-bundle and the supergravity 3-bundle. Using nonabelian differential cohomology we can conceive both of these as obstructions to lifts of structure groups through "string-like extensions". We discuss this concretely in terms of the notion of L-infinity connections.
