2-point homogeneous spaces were classified by J. Tits and H.C. Wang. It turns out, just from this list, that these spaces are symmetric. It was a longstanding problem to find a direct proof of this symmetry. In the non-compact case, S. Helgason found an elegant direct proof, but his method did not work in the compact case. Other authors have given proofs which were heavily group theoretic. We present Z.I. Szabo's simple topological proof for the symmetry of 2-point homogeneous spaces in all cases.
