Grothendieck proposed in his Esquisse d'un programme a new point of view in describing the absolute Galois group $G_Q$ of the rational numbers, by looking at its action on the geometric fundamental group functor of special categories of varieties over the rational numbers. We will show that this point of view is sometimes very successful, in particular answering a question by Ihara and Oda-Matsumoto.
