We obtain a presentation of the Schur algebras compatible with the usual presentaton of the quantized or classical enveloping algebra of gl_n. This produces both a new rational basis for the Schur algebras which is a truncated form of the PBW basis, a new integral basis related to Kostant's basis fo the integral form of the enveloping algebra, and a presentation of the Hecke algebra.
