Operads are a convenient devise for working with algebras satisfying classical identities up to `higher homotopies'. This introduction/review of the basics will be slanted toward those such algebras which are most relevant to recent applications: deformation quantization, Deligne's conjecture and renormalization of Feynman diagrams.
